We just love the holiday season in San Francisco. The weather has changed to the cool crisp evening air, residents have started to put out their garland and Christmas lights, holiday music if playing on the radio, and you may even see a few Christmas Carolers walking around Pacific Heights. One of our families favorite things to do is walk around some of the neighborhoods and look at the intricate holiday decor that the homeowner spent so much time preparing and my favorite as always been the front door.
In our opinion the front door and entry is the first impression that guests have when walking into your home. Not only does it set the tone for what is to be expected it is also one of the easiest places to shine without adding to much work or to the budget. While throughout the year we typically have a few key pieces to keep the space inviting, we get to add a little extra charm during the holidays. We just love coming home to a decorated front door, and in our opinion helps us start the decompression from a long day of work - well that and a spicy margarita.
Whether you have a grand entryway or an apartment in downtown there are so many ways to ring in that holiday decor. Here are five easy to implement front door decor ideas that be scaled up or down to help get a decked-out door to swoon over this holiday season.

1. Pick a Theme
Consistency is key. Decide on your theme and create your design off that. Whether you are doing a glitzy front door with ornaments or minimalist with mostly greenery, choosing your theme will be key with creating an appealing design that feels thought out and put together. It will also help narrow down your list for decor items when out shopping.
2. Choose Your Focal Point
Is does not matter if we are designing a home or decorating for the holidays you always want to pick your focal point that you will build your design off of. That focal point will be the initial inspiration that will draw the rest of the design theme together. So if its a red berry wreath or an eye catching door mat, find that inspiration and build around it.
3. Door Decor
The door decor is our favorite not only because it dresses up an otherwise lonely space, but you can typically find wreaths for every season and keep your front door inspiring all year round. For the holidays there are so many different options, and don't be afraid to embellish them with some extra decor like the bells on the green wreaths below.

4. Balance Your Door
Balance is everything in design and it is no different then when you are decorating your door this season. We like to start with greenery or a plant, then build off of that. You can mirror the other side with the same plant, or double down on two smaller plants of decorations that are weighted the same as the other side. If you have a smaller door space then only decorate the one side with three decorations (large plant, medium plant or decoration, small plant or decoration).

5. Don't Forget the Mat
A front entry just does not seem finished without a perfectly paired mat. It provides a visually grounding and softness that invites you into the warmth of a home. We tend to gravitate towards a jute front door mat that complements well with greenery or holiday decor. Remember if you have a double front door you will want to get a larger rug so that the door looks balanced.
